Add each completed SmartSurvey response as a new row in Google Sheets

Each time a respondent completes a SmartSurvey survey, this workflow adds their answers to a new row in Google Sheets, building a spreadsheet of results you can sort, chart and share.

The workflow as it appears in the builder after import. Each step opens for editing.

What this workflow does

SmartSurvey has its own results screens, but many teams want raw answers in a spreadsheet: to combine them with other data, chart them their own way, or share them with people who have no SmartSurvey login. Exporting after every batch of responses gets old quickly. This workflow writes each response to Google Sheets as it is completed.

The SmartSurvey trigger fires when a survey response is completed. FlowMattic receives the response and its answers. The next step adds a row in Google Sheets, and you map each answer to the column it belongs in.

One completed response gives one row. Responses started but not finished do not fire this trigger. If you change your survey questions later, map the new answers to columns in the sheet step. Task History lists every run, so you can see which responses reached the spreadsheet.

Customer satisfaction tracking

A post-purchase SmartSurvey asks for a rating and comments. Each completed response lands in a sheet where you chart scores week by week.

Event feedback for organisers

Attendees fill in a feedback survey after your event. Organisers who never log in to SmartSurvey read every answer in a shared Google Sheet.

Staff pulse surveys

Your HR team runs a short internal survey. Completed responses collect in a sheet that feeds the team's own reports and pivot tables.

How this workflow runs

What happens at each step once the workflow is on, and what you need before you import it.

  1. Step 1Trigger
    SmartSurvey Survey Response Completed

Runs when a respondent completes a SmartSurvey survey response. The answers from that response are handed to the Google Sheets step for mapping.

  2. Step 2Action
    Google Sheets Add New Row

Adds a row to the spreadsheet and sheet you pick, with the survey answers you map to its columns. Connect your Google account and set up the header row before mapping.

What you need

  • FlowMatticCore
  • SmartSurvey AccountAccount
  • Google Sheets AccountAccount

After importing, map your own data. To keep the template universal, not every step is pre-filled. Open each step in the builder and connect your accounts and fields (channels, lists, sheets, recipients) before you switch the workflow on.

Make it yours

Changes worth making after you import it.

  • Put a header row in your sheet with one column per question before you map, so each answer has a clear place and the columns stay in order.
  • If responses from more than one survey reach this trigger, add a Filter after it that continues only for the survey this sheet is for. A test run shows the data you can check.
  • If the response data includes a date or time, map it into its own column so you can sort and chart results over time.

Questions about this workflow

Do partial SmartSurvey responses reach Google Sheets?

No. The trigger fires when a response is completed, so answers from respondents who leave part way through are not sent.

Will older SmartSurvey responses be added to the sheet?

No. Only responses completed after you turn the workflow on create rows. Export older results from SmartSurvey if you want them in the same sheet.

What happens in the Google Sheet if I add a question to my survey?

The new answer is not written anywhere until you add a column and map it in the Google Sheets step. Existing columns keep working.

Can each SmartSurvey survey go to its own Google Sheets tab?

Yes, if the response data tells the surveys apart. Use a Router after the trigger with one route per survey, each with its own Add New Row step pointing at a different sheet.
