Log every new Linear issue in a Google Sheets tracker

Every issue created in Linear is added as a new row in a Google Sheets spreadsheet, giving people outside your engineering team a running list of issues they can sort, filter and share.

Linear Google Sheets

2 steps Setup ~5 min Used on 2.5k sites Free to import

The Log every new Linear issue in a Google Sheets tracker workflow on the FlowMattic canvas, with 2 steps across Linear, Google Sheets
The workflow as it appears in the builder after import. Each step opens for editing.

What this workflow does

Linear is where engineers work, but managers, support leads and clients often don't have seats in it. A spreadsheet they can open without a Linear account answers the question of what was reported and when. This workflow builds that sheet one issue at a time.

The Linear trigger fires when a new issue is created, and FlowMattic receives the issue data Linear sends, such as its title, identifier and team. The Google Sheets step then runs Add New Row, writing the fields you map into the columns of the spreadsheet you choose.

The sheet is a log of how each issue looked when it was created. Later changes in Linear, such as a new status, assignee or title, aren't copied into the row. Task History shows each run, which helps if a row looks wrong.

Weekly bug count for a product manager

A product manager pivots the sheet by week to see how many issues each team opened, without needing to learn Linear's views.

Client-visible issue list

An agency shares a Google Sheet with a client so they can see every issue logged against their project as it is created.

Support team awareness

Support staff check the sheet to see whether a bug a customer reports has already been filed, before opening a duplicate.

How this workflow runs

What happens at each step once the workflow is on, and what you need before you import it.

  1. Step 1Trigger
    Linear New Issue

Fires when a new issue is created in Linear. The issue data Linear sends, such as its title and identifier, becomes available to map into the sheet.

  2. Step 2Action
    Google Sheets Add New Row

Writes one new row per issue into the spreadsheet and sheet you pick. Map Linear's issue fields to your columns, with a column for the creation date if you want to sort by it.

What you need

  • FlowMatticCore
  • Linear AccountAccount
  • Google Sheets AccountAccount

After importing, map your own data. To keep the template universal, not every step is pre-filled. Open each step in the builder and connect your accounts and fields (channels, lists, sheets, recipients) before you switch the workflow on.

Make it yours

Changes worth making after you import it.

  • Set up the sheet's header row before import, then create a test issue in Linear so FlowMattic captures its fields for the Google Sheets mapping.
  • Add a Filter after the trigger that continues only for issues from one Linear team, if the trigger data includes the team, so the sheet tracks just that team's work.
  • Include the issue's URL in a column, if Linear sends it, so anyone with a Linear seat can open the issue straight from the spreadsheet.

Questions about this workflow

Does the Google Sheets row update when the Linear issue changes?

No. Each row records the issue as it was when created. The workflow adds rows only and never edits them.

Are issues created before I turn the workflow on added to the sheet?

No. Only issues created after the workflow is active are logged. Export older issues from Linear separately if you need them.

Do Linear comments or project updates add rows too?

No. Only new issues run this workflow. Linear's Issue Comments and Project Updates are separate triggers.

Can one Google Sheet hold issues from several Linear teams?

Yes. Every new issue the trigger receives adds a row. Map the team field into its own column if you want to sort by team.

It's very straightforward, has a lot integrations and they work well. It is one thing to 'integrate' new external software, but integrating it well, with lots of options is where FlowMattic shines.
