Send a payment receipt email via Gmail for each Braintree transaction

When Braintree reports a transaction event you selected, this workflow sends a receipt email from your Gmail account, built from the transaction details Braintree passes to FlowMattic.

Braintree Gmail

2 steps Setup ~5 min Used on 1.3k sites Free to import

The Send a payment receipt email via Gmail for each Braintree transaction workflow on the FlowMattic canvas, with 2 steps across Braintree, Gmail
The workflow as it appears in the builder after import. Each step opens for editing.

What this workflow does

Braintree processes the card payment, but the note your customer keeps is often something you write yourself. Sending those by hand means looking up each payment and typing the amount and reference into an email. This workflow writes and sends that email for you each time a matching payment event arrives.

The Braintree trigger is a Custom Events trigger: it fires for the Braintree events you choose. Pick only the transaction events you want receipts for, so other event types don't start a run. Whatever data Braintree sends with the event becomes available to map in the next step.

The second step uses Gmail to send the message from your own mailbox. You write the subject and body yourself and drop in values from the event, such as the amount or the transaction reference. The recipient is whatever field you map into the To address, so check a test run to confirm the event carries the customer's email.

Freelancer billing clients by card

A designer takes client payments through Braintree and wants each client to get a short receipt from her own Gmail address, not a generic payment notice.

Small online shop without a receipt template

A shop running checkout on Braintree sends a plain receipt from the owner's Gmail with the amount and transaction reference filled in.

Service business taking deposits

A cleaning company collects booking deposits through Braintree and wants every client to receive a written confirmation of the deposit from the office Gmail address.

How this workflow runs

What happens at each step once the workflow is on, and what you need before you import it.

  1. Step 1Trigger
    Braintree Custom Events

Fires for the Braintree events you select in the trigger. Choose the transaction events you want receipts for. The event data Braintree sends is passed on for mapping.

  2. Step 2Action
    Gmail Send Email

Your Gmail mailbox sends the receipt. Map the recipient address, and write a subject and body that pull in values from the Braintree event, such as the amount and transaction reference.

What you need

  • FlowMatticCore
  • Braintree AccountAccount
  • Gmail AccountAccount

After importing, map your own data. To keep the template universal, not every step is pre-filled. Open each step in the builder and connect your accounts and fields (channels, lists, sheets, recipients) before you switch the workflow on.

Make it yours

Changes worth making after you import it.

  • Make one test payment before going live, then open Task History to see exactly which fields the event carries before you map the receipt.
  • If the event data has no customer email, the Gmail step has no one to send to. Check a test run first and only go live once an email field shows up to map.
  • If you select more than one Braintree event, add a Filter after the trigger on a field the test run shows, such as the event kind, so only completed payments get a receipt.

Questions about this workflow

Which Braintree events start this workflow?

Only the ones you select in the Custom Events trigger. The template doesn't preset them, so choose the transaction events you want receipts for and leave out the rest.

Does the Braintree event include the customer's email address?

It depends on the event and on what was stored with the payment. Run a test transaction and look at the trigger data in Task History before mapping the To field.

Can the Gmail step attach a PDF receipt?

This template sends a text email you write in the Gmail step. It doesn't create a PDF or attach one.

Will Braintree stop sending its own emails?

No. The workflow only listens for events. It doesn't change anything in your Braintree account, so any emails Braintree already sends continue as before.
