Add new Funraise donors to a Mailchimp audience for stewardship emails

Each new Funraise transaction adds the donor to your Mailchimp audience, or updates them if they are already there, so the people who give are on the list you use for thank-yous and stewardship emails.

The workflow as it appears in the builder after import. Each step opens for editing.

What this workflow does

Thanking donors and keeping them informed works best when they are on your email list soon after they give. If Funraise and Mailchimp are not connected, someone exports donors and imports them on a schedule, and new supporters wait. This workflow puts each donor into Mailchimp as their gift is recorded.

The Funraise trigger is Transaction Created, which fires when a new transaction is created. FlowMattic receives the transaction data, including the donor details Funraise sends with it. The second step runs Add New Member in Mailchimp. That action adds a member to your audience, or updates the member if the address is already there.

The trigger is about transactions, not first-time donors. A supporter who gives again starts another run, and Mailchimp updates their existing member record instead of adding a duplicate. Because there is no Filter, every transaction type Funraise reports reaches Mailchimp. Make a test donation after import to see which donor values arrive, and check Task History for each run.

Stewardship series for donors

Donors join an audience that feeds your stewardship emails, such as impact updates and stories from the programs their gifts support.

Year-end campaign givers

Gifts made during a year-end appeal add or update donors in Mailchimp, so the January thank-you and report reach everyone who gave.

Gifts from a donation form on your site

Your website's Funraise giving form records each gift as a transaction, and the donor is added to the Mailchimp audience you use for monthly news.

How this workflow runs

What happens at each step once the workflow is on, and what you need before you import it.

  1. Step 1Trigger
    Funraise Transaction Created

Fires when a new transaction is created in your Funraise account. The donor and gift details Funraise sends become available to map into Mailchimp.

  2. Step 2Action
    Mailchimp Add New Member

Adds the donor to your Mailchimp audience, or updates them if their address is already a member. Connect Mailchimp and map the donor's email and name. A test donation shows what else the step accepts.

What you need

  • FlowMatticCore
  • Funraise AccountAccount
  • Mailchimp AccountAccount

After importing, map your own data. To keep the template universal, not every step is pre-filled. Open each step in the builder and connect your accounts and fields (channels, lists, sheets, recipients) before you switch the workflow on.

Make it yours

Changes worth making after you import it.

  • Add a Filter after the trigger if some Funraise transactions should not reach Mailchimp, such as test gifts. Look in the trigger data for a value that tells them apart.
  • Map the donor's name into the member so your stewardship emails can greet each supporter by name.
  • Add a Mailchimp Add Member Tag step after this one with a tag such as Donor, so you can build segments for donor-only emails in your audience.

Questions about this workflow

What happens when a returning Funraise donor gives again?

A new transaction starts another run. Mailchimp's Add New Member action updates a member who already exists, so the donor is not added twice.

Does this only add first-time Funraise donors to Mailchimp?

No. The trigger fires for each new transaction, so every gift runs the workflow. Existing members are updated rather than duplicated.

Do donors need to opt in before they reach my Mailchimp audience?

That depends on your consent practice and Mailchimp's rules. Run a test after import, see how the new member appears in your audience, and only send donors who agreed to receive email.

Are donations made before importing added to Mailchimp?

No. Only transactions created after the workflow is turned on start a run. Earlier donors need to be imported into Mailchimp another way.
