Add new Smart Quiz Builder respondents to a Mailchimp audience for follow-up

When someone completes a quiz in Smart Quiz Builder, this workflow adds them to your Mailchimp audience, or updates them if they are already there, so you can follow up by email.

The workflow as it appears in the builder after import. Each step opens for editing.

What this workflow does

A quiz is a good way to get people interested, but the respondents are only useful for marketing if they reach your email list. Copying them across from the quiz tool by hand is slow and tends to lag behind. This workflow does it for each completed quiz.

The Smart Quiz Builder trigger fires when a quiz form is filled in completely, and passes the response to FlowMattic. The Mailchimp Add New Member action then adds the person to the audience you choose. If that address is already in the audience, Mailchimp updates the existing member instead of adding a second one.

For this to work, your quiz has to collect an email address, because that is what Mailchimp files the member under. Unfinished quizzes don't fire the trigger, so only people who reach the end are added. Every completed response runs the workflow, and Task History records what was sent to Mailchimp and how it replied.

Product recommendation quiz for a shop

Shoppers answer a few questions to find a product. Each finisher joins your Mailchimp audience, so you can email them about the range the quiz pointed to.

Course or coaching assessment

A self-assessment quiz asks for an email at the end. Everyone who completes it is added to the audience you use for course announcements.

Event trivia that builds a list

Visitors at a stand play a quiz on a tablet. Each completed entry becomes a Mailchimp member you can thank after the event.

How this workflow runs

What happens at each step once the workflow is on, and what you need before you import it.

  1. Step 1Trigger
Smart Quiz Builder New Quiz Response

Fires when a respondent completes a Smart Quiz Builder quiz. The response, including any email the quiz asks for, is passed on for mapping.

  2. Step 2Action
    Mailchimp Add New Member

Adds the respondent to the Mailchimp audience you pick, or updates them if their email is already a member. Map the quiz email field here, plus any name fields the quiz collects.

What you need

  • FlowMatticCore
  • Smart Quiz Builder AccountAccount
  • Mailchimp AccountAccount

After importing, map your own data. To keep the template universal, not every step is pre-filled. Open each step in the builder and connect your accounts and fields (channels, lists, sheets, recipients) before you switch the workflow on.

Make it yours

Changes worth making after you import it.

  • Ask for the email address in the quiz itself, and make that question required if Smart Quiz Builder lets you, so every completed response gives Mailchimp an address.
  • Complete the quiz yourself once after import. FlowMattic then has a real response to map from, and you can confirm the test address appears in Mailchimp.
  • If only some respondents should join this audience, add a Filter after the trigger that checks a quiz answer before the Mailchimp step runs.

Questions about this workflow

What if the respondent is already in my Mailchimp audience?

Add New Member adds new people and updates people who already exist, so a repeat respondent is not added twice. Mapped values from the newest quiz response are sent to their existing record.

Are people who abandon the Smart Quiz Builder quiz added?

No. The trigger fires only when a quiz form is filled in completely, so partial attempts never reach Mailchimp.

Can quiz answers go into Mailchimp as well as the email?

You can map any value from the response into what the Mailchimp step accepts. Run a test to see which quiz fields arrive, then map the ones you want to keep.

Do respondents need to agree to marketing emails?

Whether you can email them depends on the consent you collect and the rules where you operate. Add a consent question to the quiz if you need one.

It's an exceptional product. Works great and extremely valuable. I saved thousands of dollard on Zapier, as Flowmattic makes me able to host the automation myself. And very deeply integrates with the products I need.
