Sync new Iterable subscribers into a Mailchimp audience
When Iterable sends a subscribe event to this workflow’s webhook, FlowMattic adds that person to the Mailchimp audience you choose, or updates them if their address is already a member there.

What this workflow does
Some teams run lifecycle messaging in Iterable and newsletters or ads audiences in Mailchimp. When the two lists drift apart, someone exports and imports CSV files by hand. This workflow moves each new Iterable subscriber into Mailchimp as the subscribe event happens.
The Iterable trigger, Setup Webhook, runs for whichever events Iterable is told to send to its URL. Set the Iterable webhook to send only subscribe events. Other events, such as unsubscribes, would otherwise also reach the next step and add those people to Mailchimp. FlowMattic itself does not check the event type as imported.
The Mailchimp step, Add New Member, adds the person to your audience, or updates the member if that address is already in it. Map the email address from the Iterable data, plus any name details it carries. Task History lists each event received and Mailchimp's reply, which is the place to look when someone doesn't appear.
Product emails in Iterable, newsletter in Mailchimp
Users who subscribe through your app's Iterable flows also land in the Mailchimp audience that receives your monthly newsletter.
Retargeting audiences built in Mailchimp
Your marketing team builds ad audiences from Mailchimp. New Iterable subscribers reach that audience without anyone exporting a list.
Moving from Mailchimp to Iterable in stages
While both tools run side by side, sign-ups captured in Iterable keep the older Mailchimp audience current until you switch over.
How this workflow runs
What happens at each step once the workflow is on, and what you need before you import it.
Iterable Setup WebhookReceives the events Iterable posts to this webhook URL. Configure Iterable to send only subscribe events, then send a test so FlowMattic captures the subscriber fields you will map.
Mailchimp Add New MemberAdds the subscriber to the Mailchimp audience you choose, or updates them if the address is already a member. Map the email from the Iterable event and connect your Mailchimp account.
What you need
- FlowMatticCore
- Iterable AccountAccount
- Mailchimp AccountAccount
After importing, map your own data. To keep the template universal, not every step is pre-filled. Open each step in the builder and connect your accounts and fields (channels, lists, sheets, recipients) before you switch the workflow on.
Make it yours
Changes worth making after you import it.
- If you can't limit the Iterable webhook to one event type, add a Filter after the trigger that continues only when the event name equals the subscribe event Iterable reports. Check a test run for the exact value.
- Map only fields Iterable fills on every subscribe event. A blank value in a later event can overwrite a field the Mailchimp member already has.
- Add Mailchimp's Add Member Tag action after the Add New Member step to tag these people with their source, so you can tell Iterable sign-ups apart inside the audience.
Questions about this workflow
What happens if an Iterable unsubscribe event reaches the webhook?
As imported, nothing checks the event type, so the Mailchimp step would add or update that person too. Send only subscribe events from Iterable, or add a Filter on the event name.
Will someone already in the Mailchimp audience be added twice?
No. Add New Member updates a member whose address is already in the audience instead of creating a second one. Fields you map can still change on that member.
Does an Iterable unsubscribe remove people from Mailchimp?
No. This template only adds or updates members. Removing people would need a separate workflow with its own webhook for unsubscribe events and Mailchimp's Archive Member action.
Do Iterable subscribers need to have opted in to Mailchimp email?
Mailchimp's rules require consent from each audience member. Pass across only subscribers who agreed to receive the kind of email you send from Mailchimp.
