What this workflow does

A welcome email is standard. A short text message stands out more, and it can feel more personal if it mentions where the subscriber is. This workflow builds that text from your Mailchimp data plus a country lookup, then sends it by SMS.

A person joining your list starts the Mailchimp trigger. The second step uses ISO to get country details by country name: the country's name, code, capital, region, currency, language and flag. The last step sends an SMS with Twilio to the number you map, and the message text can include the subscriber's details and the country data.

Two things must be in the subscriber data for this to work: a country name to look up and a mobile number to text. Collect both in your Mailchimp sign-up form, and check a test run to see how they arrive. Task History keeps a record of every welcome text the workflow attempts.

Make it yours

Changes worth making after you import it.

Add a Filter after the trigger that continues only when the phone value is not empty, so subscribers without a mobile number don't produce a Twilio call that can't be delivered.
Store mobile numbers in international format with the country code. Twilio sends to numbers in that form.
Add a short Delay before the SMS if you prefer the text to arrive a little after the welcome email rather than at the same moment.

Questions about this workflow

Where does the ISO step get the country name from?

From a value in the Mailchimp subscriber data that you map into the ISO step. Your audience needs to collect the country name, so check a test subscriber to see what arrives.

What if a Mailchimp subscriber has no phone number?

The Twilio step still runs but has no number to send to, and Task History shows the error on that step. A Filter on the phone value prevents those attempts.

Does sending the welcome SMS need a Twilio account?

Yes. Messages are sent from your Twilio account and number, which you connect to the third step.

Are people already in my Mailchimp audience texted?

No. Existing subscribers are left alone; the welcome text goes only to people who join after the workflow is switched on.
