Verify each new OpenRead lead's email with Mailboxlayer, then add them to Campaign Monitor

Every new OpenRead.io lead’s email is checked with Mailboxlayer, then the lead is added to your Campaign Monitor list. The check doesn’t hold anyone back unless you add a Filter.

OpenRead.io Mailboxlayer Campaign Monitor

3 steps Setup ~5 min Used on 1.3k sites Free to import

The Verify each new OpenRead lead's email with Mailboxlayer, then add them to Campaign Monitor workflow on the FlowMattic canvas, with 3 steps across OpenRead.io, Mailboxlayer, Campaign Monitor
The workflow as it appears in the builder after import. Each step opens for editing.

What this workflow does

Mailboxlayer tells you whether an email address looks deliverable. Paired with an OpenRead.io funnel and a Campaign Monitor list, it lets you see the quality of each lead as it arrives, and, with one added step, keep poor addresses off the list.

The OpenRead.io trigger receives each lead captured by your funnel. The Mailboxlayer Verify Single Email step checks the lead's address and returns its findings. It ships unmapped, so after import you map the lead's email into it and connect your Mailboxlayer account.

Then Campaign Monitor adds the lead as a subscriber. Choose the list and map the email and name, since the step is empty in the template. The verification isn't checked by any step, so every lead is added, including ones Mailboxlayer flags. The result stays visible in Task History for each run.

If you want verification to decide who joins, put a Filter between the Mailboxlayer step and the Campaign Monitor step. Test with a real address and a made-up one first, and use the Mailboxlayer value that differs between the two runs as the Filter's condition.

Lead quality check on a new funnel

A marketer launching an OpenRead.io funnel adds every lead to Campaign Monitor and reviews the Mailboxlayer results in Task History to judge the traffic source.

Verified-only list for a sales newsletter

A B2B company adds a Filter between Mailboxlayer and Campaign Monitor, so only addresses that pass its check join the newsletter list.

Course waitlist with address checks

An educator's OpenRead.io waitlist adds each sign-up to Campaign Monitor and keeps a verification record for every address in the run log.

How this workflow runs

What happens at each step once the workflow is on, and what you need before you import it.

  1. Step 1Trigger
    OpenRead.io Capture New Lead

Fires whenever OpenRead.io captures a lead in your funnel. The lead's email address and any other details are made available to Mailboxlayer and Campaign Monitor.

  2. Step 2Action
    Mailboxlayer Verify Single Email

Verifies the lead's email with Mailboxlayer and returns the result. The step ships unmapped: map the OpenRead.io email into it. As imported, no step acts on what it returns.

  3. Step 3Action
    Campaign Monitor Add Subscriber

Adds the lead to your Campaign Monitor list as a subscriber, regardless of the Mailboxlayer result. Select the list after import and map the email and name from OpenRead.io.

What you need

  • FlowMatticCore
  • OpenRead.io AccountAccount
  • Mailboxlayer AccountAccount
  • Campaign Monitor AccountAccount

After importing, map your own data. To keep the template universal, not every step is pre-filled. Open each step in the builder and connect your accounts and fields (channels, lists, sheets, recipients) before you switch the workflow on.

Make it yours

Changes worth making after you import it.

  • To keep flagged addresses off your list, put a Filter between the Mailboxlayer step and the Campaign Monitor step on the Mailboxlayer value that marks a good address, as seen in a test run.
  • Map the lead's first name into the Campaign Monitor step so your emails can greet each subscriber by name.
  • Test with two leads, one real and one made up, and compare the Mailboxlayer output in Task History before you choose a Filter condition.

Questions about this workflow

Does Mailboxlayer stop bad OpenRead.io leads from reaching Campaign Monitor?

Not as imported. Mailboxlayer checks each address, but nothing acts on its answer, so every lead becomes a subscriber. A Filter between the Mailboxlayer and Campaign Monitor steps changes that.

What does Mailboxlayer return for each email?

Its verification findings for the address. Look at a test run in Task History to see the fields it returns, then pick the one your Filter should check.

Which accounts does this OpenRead.io and Mailboxlayer workflow use?

Your Mailboxlayer account for Verify Single Email and your Campaign Monitor account for Add Subscriber. Connect each in its own step after import. OpenRead.io sends the leads to the trigger.

Can an existing Campaign Monitor subscriber come through from OpenRead.io?

Yes, if they opt in again. How Campaign Monitor treats an address that is already on the list is its own decision, so try a lead with an existing subscriber's email and read the Add Subscriber response in Task History.

It is self hosted and wordpress based. So you can effectively run this on any shared hosting with unlimited tasks. And new integrations are constantly being added. It's crazy how valuable this tool is.

The software works really well, and the team is adding integrations constantly, so I'm positive it eventually will catch up with Zapier. The flows are very easy to create and if you have any doubt, the team will give you great support.
