Email the next course to learners who finish a course

When a learner completes a LearnDash course, FlowMattic sends them a congratulations email that points to the next course you want them to take.

The Email the next course to learners who finish a course workflow on the FlowMattic canvas, with 2 steps across LearnDash, Email
The workflow as it appears in the builder after import. Each step opens for editing.

What this workflow does

The moment a learner finishes a course is a good time to tell them where to go next. They are still engaged, and a short note from you lands while the win is fresh. This workflow sends that note on its own, so nobody has to watch completion reports and write to each learner by hand.

The LearnDash Course Completed trigger starts a run each time a learner completes a course. It passes on the learner's email address and the name of the course they just finished.

The Email step then writes to that learner. The subject reads "You did it - what's next?" and the body congratulates them by course name and says the next course is waiting. The template text does not name or link a specific course yet, so before you turn the workflow on, edit the body and add the course title and its URL.

As imported, every completed course gets the same message. If you run several course paths, you can send a different suggestion for each finished course with a Router, as described in the tips. The Email step uses WordPress mail or the SMTP account you set in FlowMattic, and Task History shows each run and what the step returned.

Course series with a clear next step

A coding school with Part 1 and Part 2 courses emails everyone who completes Part 1 a link to Part 2, written once in the Email step.

Upsell from a free course to a paid one

A coach whose free LearnDash intro course leads into a paid program sends finishers the program page as soon as they complete the intro.

Keeping members moving through a library

A membership site with many short courses suggests one popular follow-up course to every member who completes any course.

How this workflow runs

What happens at each step once the workflow is on, and what you need before you import it.

  1. Step 1Trigger
    LearnDash Course Completed

Fires when a learner completes a LearnDash course. The learner's email and the completed course's name are passed to the email step.

  2. Step 2Action
    Email Send Email

Sends an email to the learner's address with the subject "You did it - what's next?" and a body that names the finished course. Add the next course's title and link to the body before going live, since the template doesn't include one.

What you need

  • FlowMatticCore
  • LearnDash PluginPlugin

After importing, map your own data. To keep the template universal, not every step is pre-filled. Open each step in the builder and connect your accounts and fields (channels, lists, sheets, recipients) before you switch the workflow on.

Make it yours

Changes worth making after you import it.

  • Replace the line about the perfect next course with the real course name and a link to its page, so the email gives the learner something to click.
  • For a different suggestion per course, put a Router between the Course Completed trigger and the Email step. Move the Email step into the first route and give every other route its own copy with its own course link. Match exact course names so no two routes fit the same course.
  • Add a Delay between the trigger and the Email step if you'd rather the suggestion arrive a day after the course is finished instead of straight away.
  • Set your SMTP details in FlowMattic so the message goes out from your school's address instead of the default WordPress mail sender.

Questions about this workflow

Does the email name the next LearnDash course automatically?

No. The template body only says the next course is waiting. You write the course name and link into the Email step yourself, or set up a Router to choose a different course per completed one.

Will learners who completed a course before I import this get the email?

No. The trigger fires on new completions after the workflow is turned on. Earlier completions don't start a run.

Can I send the follow-up from Gmail or another mail service?

The Email step sends through WordPress mail or the SMTP account you enter in FlowMattic. Enter your mail provider's SMTP details there, or swap in that provider's own send action if FlowMattic has one.

What if a learner completes the course that is itself the suggested next one?

They still get the same email, because every completion runs the step. A Router on the course name, placed between the trigger and the Email step, lets you send those learners something else or nothing.
