Add new Formspree submitters to an ActiveCampaign list

Each new Formspree submission creates or updates the person as an ActiveCampaign contact, then subscribes that contact to the ActiveCampaign list you choose.

Formspree ActiveCampaign

3 steps Setup ~5 min Used on 1.5k sites Free to import

The Add new Formspree submitters to an ActiveCampaign list workflow on the FlowMattic canvas, with 3 steps across Formspree, ActiveCampaign
The workflow as it appears in the builder after import. Each step opens for editing.

What this workflow does

Formspree is a popular back end for forms on static sites and landing pages, but it isn't an email marketing tool. When those submitters belong on an ActiveCampaign list, this workflow puts them there without exports or copy-paste.

The Formspree trigger fires for each new form submission and passes the fields along. The first ActiveCampaign step, Create or Update Contact, creates a new contact or updates an existing one, so the person is in ActiveCampaign whether or not they were there before.

Step 3 then puts the Formspree submitter on one of your lists. It works on a contact that already exists, which is why it comes after the create-or-update step: map the contact returned by step 2 into it and pick the list. The same action can also unsubscribe contacts, so check that it is set to subscribe.

Both ActiveCampaign steps arrive with their fields blank. After import, link Formspree, send a test submission, map the email and name into the contact, then set up the list step. Only subscribe people who agreed to hear from you, and check Task History after your test to see ActiveCampaign's responses.

Newsletter sign-ups on a static site

A developer's portfolio site built with a static generator uses a Formspree form for its newsletter, and each sign-up joins the ActiveCampaign newsletter list.

Lead forms on a landing page

A startup's launch page collects early-access requests with Formspree and adds every requester to an ActiveCampaign waitlist.

Event registration follow-up

A meetup organiser takes RSVPs through Formspree and puts attendees on an ActiveCampaign list for reminders and recap emails.

How this workflow runs

What happens at each step once the workflow is on, and what you need before you import it.

  1. Step 1Trigger
    Formspree New Submission

Starts the workflow whenever your Formspree form receives a new submission. The submitted fields, such as email and name, are passed on to ActiveCampaign.

  2. Step 2Action
    ActiveCampaign Create or Update Contact

Creates the submitter as a contact in ActiveCampaign, or updates the contact if the email already exists. Map the email, name and any other Formspree fields into it during setup.

  3. Step 3Action
ActiveCampaign Subscribe or Unsubscribe Contact From List

Subscribes the contact from step 2 to the ActiveCampaign list you pick. Map that contact in, choose the list and make sure the step is set to subscribe rather than unsubscribe.

What you need

  • FlowMatticCore
  • Formspree AccountAccount
  • ActiveCampaign AccountAccount

After importing, map your own data. To keep the template universal, not every step is pre-filled. Open each step in the builder and connect your accounts and fields (channels, lists, sheets, recipients) before you switch the workflow on.

Make it yours

Changes worth making after you import it.

  • If your Formspree form includes a consent checkbox, put a Filter between the Create or Update Contact step and the list step that continues only when it is ticked. Everyone is still saved as a contact, and only those who agreed join the list.
  • Use ActiveCampaign's Add/Remove Tag From Contact action after the list step to tag contacts by the form they came from.
  • Add ActiveCampaign's Add Existing Contact to Automation action at the end to start a welcome series for each new subscriber.

Questions about this workflow

What if the Formspree submitter is already an ActiveCampaign contact?

Create or Update Contact updates the existing contact instead of making a second one. The list step then subscribes that same contact.

Why are there two ActiveCampaign steps instead of one?

The list action works on an existing contact. The first step makes sure the contact exists, and the second adds it to the list.

Can one Formspree submission join several ActiveCampaign lists?

Add another Subscribe or Unsubscribe Contact From List step after the first, map the same contact and pick the second list.

Does the workflow handle every Formspree form I have?

It follows the Formspree form you link during setup. For another form, duplicate the workflow and link the copy to it.
