Add new SendOwl buyers to a Mailchimp audience after a payment

When a SendOwl order completes and the payment has cleared, FlowMattic adds the buyer to your Mailchimp audience, or updates them if they are already a member.

The Add new SendOwl buyers to a Mailchimp audience after a payment workflow on the FlowMattic canvas, with 2 steps across SendOwl, Mailchimp
The workflow as it appears in the builder after import. Each step opens for editing.

What this workflow does

Selling ebooks, courses or templates through SendOwl gives you a list of buyers, but those people don't reach your Mailchimp audience on their own. This workflow adds each paying customer to Mailchimp once their order is complete, so your post-purchase emails and product updates can reach them.

The SendOwl trigger is Order Completed. FlowMattic describes it as firing when the payment has cleared and the products are available for download, so unpaid or pending checkouts don't start a run. The order's buyer details are passed to the next step.

The Mailchimp Add New Member step adds the person to the audience you choose, or updates them if that email is already a member. It ships unmapped: after import, connect Mailchimp, pick the audience, and map the buyer's email plus any name fields from the SendOwl order.

Every completed order runs the flow, so a customer who buys again is sent to Mailchimp again and their member record is updated rather than duplicated. Place a test order and check Task History to see the buyer fields SendOwl sent and Mailchimp's reply.

Updates for ebook buyers

An author who sells PDFs through SendOwl adds every buyer to a Mailchimp audience used to announce new editions and the next book.

Onboarding emails after a course purchase

A creator selling a video course on SendOwl puts each paying student into Mailchimp, where a welcome automation explains how to get started.

Customer list for a template shop

A designer who sells template packs keeps buyers in a dedicated Mailchimp audience, separate from casual newsletter sign-ups, for launch offers.

How this workflow runs

What happens at each step once the workflow is on, and what you need before you import it.

  1. Step 1Trigger
    SendOwl Order Completed

Fires when a SendOwl order is completed, meaning the payment has cleared and the buyer can download the products. The order and buyer details are handed to Mailchimp.

  2. Step 2Action
    Mailchimp Add New Member

Adds the buyer to a Mailchimp audience, or updates the member if the email is already there. Map the buyer's email and name and choose the audience after import.

What you need

  • FlowMatticCore
  • SendOwl AccountAccount
  • Mailchimp AccountAccount

After importing, map your own data. To keep the template universal, not every step is pre-filled. Open each step in the builder and connect your accounts and fields (channels, lists, sheets, recipients) before you switch the workflow on.

Make it yours

Changes worth making after you import it.

  • Add Mailchimp's Add Member Tag step after Add New Member and map the SendOwl product name as the tag, so you can send follow-ups to buyers of one product only.
  • Send a test order first so the SendOwl buyer fields appear in FlowMattic, then map the buyer's email into Add New Member exactly as it arrives.
  • Respect consent: if your SendOwl checkout asks whether the buyer wants marketing email, put a Filter on that answer between the SendOwl trigger and the Mailchimp step.

Questions about this workflow

Does a returning SendOwl customer get added to Mailchimp twice?

No. Each completed order runs the workflow again, but Add New Member updates an existing member instead of creating a duplicate.

Are buyers added before their SendOwl payment clears?

No. The Order Completed trigger only fires once payment has cleared and the products are ready to download.

Which Mailchimp audience receives the buyers?

The one you pick in the Add New Member step after import. The step ships without an audience or field mapping, so set both before you turn the workflow on.

What about refunds or chargebacks in SendOwl?

This workflow doesn't react to them. SendOwl has separate Refund Issued and Order Charged Back triggers in FlowMattic, which you could use in another workflow, for example to tag or remove those people in Mailchimp.
