Generate custom response with OpenAI and display it to user on Fluent Form submission

When someone submits your Fluent Forms form, OpenAI writes a reply from the answers they gave, and Fluent Forms shows that reply to them as the form’s success message.

The workflow as it appears in the builder after import. Each step opens for editing.

What this workflow does

A plain "Thanks, we got your message" tells a visitor nothing new. With this workflow, the confirmation they see after submitting is written for them: a short plan from a quiz, a first answer to their question, or a suggestion based on what they selected.

The Fluent Forms trigger fires when a form submission is received, and passes the submitted fields on. You pick which form after import. The OpenAI Generate Content step then writes text from a prompt. It ships unmapped, so you connect your OpenAI account and write the prompt yourself, mapping in the form fields the reply should use, along with instructions on tone and length.

The last step is Fluent Forms' Set Custom Response action, which FlowMattic describes as setting a custom response in place of the form's success message. Map OpenAI's generated text into it after import. The visitor sees that text on the page once they submit.

The reply can only appear once OpenAI has answered, so keep both the prompt and the requested reply short. Test with real answers and read the replies before going live: OpenAI writes whatever the prompt allows, so keep the instructions narrow. Task History shows what OpenAI returned for each submission.

Quiz results written for each visitor

A fitness coach's Fluent Forms quiz asks about goals and schedule, and the success message gives the visitor a short suggested routine based on their answers.

First answer on a support form

A software company's help form shows a short reply drawing on the question the visitor typed, before a human follows up by email.

Gift ideas from a questionnaire

A gift shop asks who the present is for and their interests, and the confirmation lists a few ideas written from those answers.

How this workflow runs

What happens at each step once the workflow is on, and what you need before you import it.

  1. Step 1Trigger
    Fluent Forms New Form Submission

Starts when a submission is received on the Fluent Forms form you choose. Every submission is one run, and the submitted field values are passed to OpenAI.

  2. Step 2Action
    OpenAI (ChatGPT) Generate Content

Generates text with OpenAI from a prompt. The step ships unmapped: connect OpenAI and write the prompt, mapping in the form answers and telling it how long and in what tone to reply.

  3. Step 3Action
    Fluent Forms Set Custom Response

Sets a custom response on the Fluent Forms submission, shown instead of the usual success message. Map the text from the OpenAI step into it after import.

What you need

  • FlowMatticCore
  • Fluent Forms PluginPlugin
  • OpenAI (ChatGPT) AccountAccount

After importing, map your own data. To keep the template universal, not every step is pre-filled. Open each step in the builder and connect your accounts and fields (channels, lists, sheets, recipients) before you switch the workflow on.

Make it yours

Changes worth making after you import it.

  • Tell OpenAI in the prompt to keep the reply to a few sentences and to use only the information in the form, so the on-page message stays short and on topic.
  • Add an Email step after the Set Custom Response step and map the OpenAI text into it, so visitors also get the reply in their inbox to keep.
  • If only some answers should get an AI reply, put a Filter between the Fluent Forms trigger and the OpenAI step that checks a form field you choose. Submissions it stops never reach OpenAI or the custom response step.

Questions about this workflow

Do I need an OpenAI account to use this Fluent Forms workflow?

Yes. The Generate Content step calls OpenAI with your own API connection, so connect your OpenAI account in FlowMattic before you turn the workflow on.

Where does the visitor see the OpenAI reply?

On the form, after they submit. The Set Custom Response step puts the text you map into the form's success message area instead of the message you set in Fluent Forms.

Is the generated reply saved anywhere?

Not by this template. The text is shown to the visitor and appears in Task History. Add a Google Sheets or Email step after the Set Custom Response step if you want to keep a copy.

Can I control what OpenAI says in the Fluent Forms response?

You control the prompt. Write clear instructions on tone, length and what not to say, map in the form answers, and test with several submissions before going live.
