When subscription created in Lemon Squeezy, add user to membership plan and activate the user

When a Lemon Squeezy subscription is created, FlowMattic finds the subscriber’s WordPress account by email, adds it to an ARMember membership plan and sets the member status you choose, such as active.

Lemon Squeezy WordPress ARMember

4 steps Setup ~8 min Used on 1.9k sites Free to import

The When subscription created in Lemon Squeezy, add user to membership plan and activate the user workflow on the FlowMattic canvas, with 4 steps across Lemon Squeezy, WordPress, ARMember
The workflow as it appears in the builder after import. Each step opens for editing.

What this workflow does

Selling a membership through Lemon Squeezy means the payment happens off your site, while ARMember decides what each WordPress user can open. This workflow connects the two: a new subscription puts the matching user on the right plan and switches their member status, so they don't wait for you to do it by hand.

The Lemon Squeezy trigger fires when a new subscription is created and passes the subscription data on, including the customer's email. The WordPress Get User by Email step looks for the site account with that address. This flow suits sites where people register first and subscribe afterwards, because the lookup only finds accounts that already exist.

Two ARMember steps follow. Add User to Membership Plan places the user on a plan, and Change Member Status updates their status. All of these actions ship unmapped. After import you map the customer email into the lookup, map the user ID it returns into both ARMember steps, choose the plan, and pick the status that makes the member active. The template doesn't set that status for you.

A subscriber with no WordPress account under that email isn't found, and the lookup returns a "User not found" message instead of a user. Test with a known account and check Task History.

Course site with sign-up before checkout

Students create a free account on the WordPress site, then subscribe through Lemon Squeezy, and the course plan in ARMember is added to that same login.

Software customers who already have an account

A plugin seller whose users register for docs access upgrades them to the paid ARMember plan the moment their Lemon Squeezy subscription starts.

Activating members held as pending

A community site keeps new registrations in a pending status and switches them to active once the Lemon Squeezy subscription is created.

How this workflow runs

What happens at each step once the workflow is on, and what you need before you import it.

  1. Step 1Trigger
    Lemon Squeezy Subscription Created

Fires when a new subscription is created in Lemon Squeezy. The subscription and customer details, are passed on. Check a test run for the email used at checkout, which the lookup needs.

  2. Step 2Action
    WordPress Get User by Email

Finds the WordPress user whose email matches the Lemon Squeezy customer. Map the customer email into it after import; it only finds accounts that already exist on your site.

  3. Step 3Action
ARMember Add User to Membership Plan

Adds the user the lookup found to an ARMember membership plan. Map the user ID from Get User by Email and pick the plan that matches the Lemon Squeezy product.

  4. Step 4Action
    ARMember Change Member Status

Changes the member's status in ARMember. Map the same user ID and choose the status that grants access, since the template leaves the status for you to set.

What you need

  • FlowMatticCore
  • Lemon Squeezy AccountAccount
  • ARMember PluginPlugin

After importing, map your own data. To keep the template universal, not every step is pre-filled. Open each step in the builder and connect your accounts and fields (channels, lists, sheets, recipients) before you switch the workflow on.

Make it yours

Changes worth making after you import it.

  • If buyers may not have an account yet, replace Get User by Email with WordPress's New User action. It creates the account, or returns the existing user's ID when that email is already registered.
  • Ask people to subscribe with the same email they use to log in, or put that note on the checkout page, so the lookup can match them.
  • Build a second workflow on Lemon Squeezy's Subscription Cancelled trigger that finds the user by email and then runs ARMember's Cancel User Membership Plan, so access ends when billing does.

Questions about this workflow

What if the Lemon Squeezy customer has no WordPress account?

The lookup can't find a user for that email and returns a "User not found" message, so there is no user for ARMember. Swap the lookup for New User if many buyers subscribe before registering.

Which ARMember status should I pick to activate the member?

The one your site uses for members who should have access. The template leaves the Change Member Status step unset, so choose it after import and test with a known account.

Do I need ARMember on the same WordPress site as FlowMattic?

Yes. ARMember runs inside WordPress, and both ARMember steps change the plan and status of users on the site where this workflow runs.

Do subscription renewals run this workflow again?

No. Only Subscription Created starts it. Lemon Squeezy has separate triggers in FlowMattic for payment success, updates and cancellations if you want to react to those.
