Connect Descript and Slack

Descript is where your team records, edits and renders podcasts and videos. FlowMattic posts the production steps to Slack: a video finished rendering, audio is mastered, a guest joined the session, a new show was set up. Editors, producers and the publishing team know what is ready without asking in a thread or opening the project.

Do this in Slack14 actions

1. TriggerVideo Rendered
2. ActionSend Channel Message

When Descript fires Video Rendered, FlowMattic runs Send Channel Message in Slack with the data from that event.

You build this in the FlowMattic workflow builder on your own site. See the setup steps

Descript and Slack workflows you can build

Each one uses only triggers and actions the two integrations ship today, plus FlowMattic's own tools. Where the library has a ready-made template, import it instead of building from scratch.

Tell the team when a Descript video is rendered

A finished render is the cue for review and upload. The content channel gets the project name, so the reviewer starts watching while the editor moves to the next cut.

Hand mastered audio to the publishing channel

Audio Mastered marks a podcast episode as ready for the host platform. The publishing channel hears which episode is done, so it goes out on the planned day.

Set your Slack status while you record

When a Descript recording starts, your Slack status changes to show you are recording, so colleagues do not ping you mid-take. A second workflow on Recording Stopped clears it.

Tell the producer when a guest joins the session

Remote guests join at their own pace. The producer gets a direct message as each participant arrives, so the host can start on time without watching the waiting room.

Open a Slack channel for each new show

A new Descript show gets its own channel named after it, with the topic set to the show's description, so scripts, guest lists and edits for that show stay in one place.

Remind the editor after a recording session ends

When a session ends, Slack sets a reminder for two days later to deliver the first cut, so raw recordings do not wait in the project for weeks.

Set up: rendered videos to the content channel

When it is working, each video that Descript renders is announced in your content channel with the project name.

  1. Connect Slack

In Connects, add a Slack account that has joined the content channel.

  2. Start with Video Rendered

Create a workflow with the Descript Video Rendered trigger and follow the trigger's instructions to link your Descript account.

  3. Render a short test

Render a short clip in Descript, so the workflow captures a real render event and its fields.

  4. Add the announcement

Add Send Channel Message, choose the content channel and map the project and composition name. Test it and switch the workflow on.

Triggers and actions in this pair

A trigger starts a workflow. An action is something FlowMattic does in the app as a step.

Good to know

  • Set Status changes the status of the Slack account you connected. It suits one person recording; each host who wants it needs their own connection.
  • Recording Started and Recording Session Started are different Descript events: one marks each take, the other the session. Pick the one that matches how often you want Slack to change.
  • Slack channel names must be lower case with no spaces, so run the show name through Text Formatter before Create Channel.

Why run this pair with FlowMattic

Descript and Slack connect through FlowMattic on your own site, with no separate automation account in the middle and no charge per run.

Production steps are visible

Renders, mastering, guests and sessions show up in Slack, so the whole team knows where each episode or video stands.

Fewer interruptions while recording

A recording status and a producer alert keep people from pinging the host at the wrong moment.

Runs on your own WordPress site

FlowMattic has no per-task pricing, so a studio rendering many cuts a day pays the same as one that renders weekly.

Common questions

How do I get a Slack message when a Descript render finishes?

Create a FlowMattic workflow with the Descript Video Rendered trigger, or Audio Rendered for audio, then add Slack's Send Channel Message. Render a test clip, map the project name into the message and switch it on.

Can my Slack status change while I record?

Yes. One workflow uses Recording Started with Set Status to show you are recording, and a second uses Recording Stopped with Set Status to clear it. It changes the status of the Slack account you connected.

What is the difference between Audio Mixed and Audio Mastered?

They are separate Descript events. Audio Mixed runs when a mix is produced, Audio Mastered when mastering is done. Most podcast teams treat Audio Mastered as ready to publish.

Can I upload the rendered file to Slack?

Slack's Upload File step can post a file when the trigger data includes a downloadable link. Check a captured Video Rendered event to see what Descript sends for your account.
