Connect WooCommerce and Twilio

Email is easy to miss; a text message on a phone usually gets read. FlowMattic links WooCommerce and Twilio so your store sends SMS at the moments that matter: a new order for the owner, a completed order for the customer, a reminder for an abandoned cart. Customers can even text an order number and get its status back.

WooCommerce and Twilio workflows you can build

Each one uses only triggers and actions the two integrations ship today, plus FlowMattic's own tools. Where the library has a ready-made template, import it instead of building from scratch.

Text the store owner about every new WooCommerce order

Owners away from the desk get an SMS with the order number, total and items, without installing an app or watching the inbox.

Send customers an SMS when their order is completed

When the order moves to completed, the billing phone gets a short text that it is on its way, which cuts down on where is my order emails.

Text a reminder an hour after a cart is abandoned

A Delay waits, Check Cart Status confirms the cart is still not ordered, and only then the shopper gets an SMS with a link back to their cart.

Reply to order status questions sent by text

A customer texts their order number to your Twilio number. Text Formatter pulls out the number, Get Order by ID reads the status and Send SMS replies with it.

Phone the owner when a very large order comes in

A Filter passes orders above an amount you set, and Twilio calls your phone, so a big wholesale order gets a person checking it the same day.

Text the stock manager when a product runs low

Product Low Stock fires at the threshold you set in WooCommerce, and the stock manager gets the product name and quantity left by SMS.

Ask customers to retry after a failed payment

An order set to failed sends the customer a polite text with a link to pay for the order, which saves sales that would otherwise wait in the failed list.

Set up: SMS alerts for new orders

At the end of these steps, every new WooCommerce order sends a text to the phone number you choose.

  1. Connect Twilio

Under Connects in FlowMattic, add a Twilio connection with your account details and the Twilio number you will send from.

  2. Start with New Order Created

Create a workflow with the WooCommerce New Order Created trigger. WooCommerce runs on the same site, so it needs no connection. Place a test order to capture the fields.

  3. Write the text

Add Twilio Send SMS, enter your mobile number in international format and write a short message with the order number, total and customer name.

  4. Test and switch on

Test the step, check that the text arrives and turn the workflow on.

Triggers and actions in this pair

A trigger starts a workflow. An action is something FlowMattic does in the app as a step.

Good to know

  • Twilio needs phone numbers in international format with the country code, such as +44 for the UK. Billing phones are typed by customers, so clean them with Text Formatter before Send SMS.
  • A Twilio trial account can only send to numbers you have verified in Twilio. Upgrade the account before texting customers.
  • Only text customers who agreed to it, for example with a checkbox at checkout, and follow the SMS rules of the countries you sell to.
  • Twilio charges for each text and call on your own Twilio account. FlowMattic runs are unlimited and add nothing per message.

Why run this pair with FlowMattic

WooCommerce and Twilio connect through FlowMattic on your own site, with no separate automation account in the middle and no charge per run.

Customer phones stay on your server

Phone numbers and order details go from your WordPress store to Twilio directly from your own server, not through another automation account.

Only Twilio's own rates

There is no extra charge per run, so the cost of each text is what Twilio bills you for it.

Two-way, not just alerts

Incoming texts can start workflows too, so customers can ask for an order status and get a reply from your store data.

Common questions

How do I send WooCommerce SMS notifications with Twilio?

Add your Twilio account under Connects, start a workflow with a WooCommerce trigger such as New Order Created or Order Status Set to Completed, and add Twilio Send SMS with the phone number and message. Test it and switch the workflow on.

Can I text the customer instead of the store owner?

Yes. Map the billing phone from the order to the To field in Send SMS. Clean it to international format first, since customers type numbers in many ways.

Can customers reply to the texts?

Yes. Replies to your Twilio number start the Incoming SMS trigger, so a second workflow can read them, look up an order and answer.

Can I send different texts for each order status?

Build one workflow per status trigger, such as processing, completed and refunded, each with its own message. That keeps every text short and specific.
