Connect Grist and Slack

Let your Grist tables speak up in Slack. New records post to the channel that owns them, status changes reach the person responsible, and a morning digest built from a SQL query lists what is overdue. FlowMattic runs it all on your own WordPress site, using the columns your documents already have.

When this happens in Grist2 triggers

Do this in Slack14 actions

1. TriggerRecord Added
2. ActionSend Channel Message

When Grist fires Record Added, FlowMattic runs Send Channel Message in Slack with the data from that event.

You build this in the FlowMattic workflow builder on your own site. See the setup steps

Grist and Slack workflows you can build

Each one uses only triggers and actions the two integrations ship today, plus FlowMattic's own tools. Where the library has a ready-made template, import it instead of building from scratch.

Post every new Grist record to a Slack channel

Requests, leads or bug reports entered in a Grist table show up in the team channel with the columns that matter, so nobody has to keep the document open to spot new rows.

Route new records by status to the right channel

A Router reads the status column. Urgent rows go to the on-call channel, normal ones to the team channel, and drafts post nothing until someone finishes them.

Message the owner when a record is marked blocked

Record Updated runs on every edit, so a Filter waits for the status to become blocked. The owner's email in the row is matched to their Slack account for a direct message.

Let an AI agent categorise each record before posting it

The agent reads the new row, picks a category and priority, writes them back to Grist with Update Record and posts a short summary, so the table and the channel agree.

Send a morning digest of overdue rows from a SQL query

Grist's Run SQL Query can select every task past its due date across a table. A Schedule runs it each morning and one Slack message lists the results.

Set a Slack reminder when a follow-up date is entered

When someone fills in the follow-up date on a record, the workflow sets a Slack reminder for that day, so the date in the table turns into a prompt at the right time.

Share a new record's attachment in Slack

Teams that keep photos, quotes or drawings in an attachments column get the file in Slack when the row is added, ready to preview without opening Grist.

Set up: new Grist records to a channel

At the end, each record added to the Grist table you choose is posted as a message in your Slack channel.

  1. Connect Grist

Under Connects, add Grist with an API key from your Grist profile settings.

  2. Connect Slack

Add a Slack connection with an account that belongs to the channel you want to post in.

  3. Watch the table

Create a workflow with Grist Record Added, pick the document and table, then add a test row so FlowMattic captures its columns.

  4. Write the message

Add Slack Send Channel Message, choose the channel, place the record's columns in the text, test the step and switch the workflow on.

Triggers and actions in this pair

A trigger starts a workflow. An action is something FlowMattic does in the app as a step.

Good to know

  • These workflows post Grist records to Slack, so Slack replies do not change Grist. To update a row from outside Grist, start from a Webhook or a Schedule and use Update Record.
  • Record Updated fires for any change in the watched table, including edits made by your own workflows. Filter on the column you care about so the channel only hears about real changes.
  • Column names come from your own table, so the mapping is an example. Rename a column after setup and you need to remap it in the Slack step.
  • Direct messages need the row's owner email to match a Slack account, because Find User by Email searches on it.

Why run this pair with FlowMattic

Grist and Slack connect through FlowMattic on your own site, with no separate automation account in the middle and no charge per run.

Your table stays the source of truth

Messages are built from the row itself, and AI or lookup results are written back to Grist, so Slack never holds information the table lacks.

SQL digests instead of a flood of pings

Run SQL Query lets you post one summary of what needs attention, which suits busy tables better than a message for every edit.

Unlimited runs on your own server

FlowMattic runs on your WordPress site, so a table that changes hundreds of times a day needs no bigger plan and row data passes through your server.

Common questions

Can Slack tell me when a Grist row changes?

Yes. Start a workflow with Grist Record Updated, pick the table, then add a Filter on the column you watch, such as status. Slack Send Channel Message or Send Direct Message posts the change.

Does this work with every document in my Grist team?

Each workflow watches one document and table that the connected API key can open. Build another workflow for each table you want in Slack, each with its own channel if you like.

Can I post a summary instead of one message per row?

Yes. Use a Schedule with Run SQL Query or List Records, then send one Slack message with the results. A Filter can skip the message on days when the query returns nothing.

Will my workflow loop if it updates the same table?

It can, because Update Record also counts as an update. Filter on a column only people change, or write the workflow's results to a column the Filter ignores.

Can an AI agent write the Slack message?

Yes. Add an AI Agent step after the trigger with your instructions and the row's columns. It can return a summary, a category or a priority that you post to Slack and save back to Grist.
