Connect WordPress and Google Drive

Google Drive is where many site owners keep the master copy of their files. FlowMattic links it to WordPress: uploads to the media library are copied to Drive, each new user can get a private folder, published posts are saved as text files, and images dropped into a Drive folder can be added to the media library as they arrive.

When WordPress fires New Media, FlowMattic runs Upload a File in Google Drive with the data from that event.

You build this in the FlowMattic workflow builder on your own site. See the setup steps

WordPress and Google Drive workflows you can build

Each one uses only triggers and actions the two integrations ship today, plus FlowMattic's own tools. Where the library has a ready-made template, import it instead of building from scratch.

Copy every media upload to a Google Drive folder

Images, PDFs and documents added to the media library are also saved in Drive, giving you an off-site copy that survives a broken update or a deleted file.

Create and share a Drive folder for each new user

Agencies and coaches give every client account a folder named after the username, shared with the client's email, so files are exchanged in one agreed place.

Save each published post as a text file in Drive

Editors keep a plain copy of every article outside WordPress. Text Formatter strips the HTML and Create File From Text saves the post under its title.

Photographers and content teams drop finished images into a shared folder, and each new file is added to the media library, ready to use in posts.

Share a client folder when the user's role changes

When an account moves from Subscriber to Client, the matching Drive folder is found by name and shared with them, so access follows the role you give.

Rename a deleted user's folder as archived

When an account is deleted, its Drive folder is renamed with an Archived prefix. The files stay available to you while it is clear the client has left.

Set up: media uploads copied to Drive

At the end, each file added to your WordPress media library is also uploaded to the Drive folder you choose.

  1. Make the folder

Create a folder in Google Drive for the copies, for example Website media.

  2. Connect Google Drive

Open Connects in FlowMattic and add a Google Drive connection with the account that owns that folder.

  3. Start from New Media

Create a workflow with the WordPress New Media trigger and upload a test image to capture its URL and title.

  4. Upload to Drive

Add Google Drive Upload a File, choose the folder, map the file URL and name, test the step and switch the workflow on.

Triggers and actions in this pair

A trigger starts a workflow. An action is something FlowMattic does in the app as a step.

Good to know

  • Start imports from New File in Folder and give them their own folder. Updated File also runs when an existing file is edited, which would add the image to the media library a second time.
  • An upload copies the file once. Later edits in WordPress or Drive are not synced between the two.
  • Share File with Anyone and Share Folder with Anyone create public links. Use Share Folder with a specific email for client files.

Why run this pair with FlowMattic

WordPress and Google Drive connect through FlowMattic on your own site, with no separate automation account in the middle and no charge per run.

An off-site copy of your files

Media lives on your server and in your Google Drive, so one bad plugin update or a mistaken delete does not lose the original.

Files move between your accounts

Your WordPress site sends files straight to your Google account. No other automation service handles them in between.

Large libraries cost the same

Runs are unlimited, so copying thousands of uploads a month needs no bigger plan.

Common questions

Is there a Google Drive WordPress integration for backing up media?

Yes. With FlowMattic, the WordPress New Media trigger and the Google Drive Upload a File action copy every new upload to a Drive folder. It covers new uploads from the moment you switch it on.

Will files already in my media library be copied?

No, New Media fires only for new uploads. For older files, run a one-off Schedule workflow with Get Posts by Post Type for attachments, loop over them with Iterator and upload each file with Upload a File.

Can each WordPress user get a private Drive folder?

Yes. Start from New User, run Create a Folder named after the username, then Share Folder with the user's email so only they and you can open it.

What happens to the Drive copy if I delete the file in WordPress?

Nothing. The copy in Google Drive stays where it is, which is what you want from a backup. Remove it from Drive yourself when you are sure you no longer need it.

Can Drive files be added to the media library?

Yes. Start a workflow with Google Drive's New File in Folder trigger and add WordPress New Media, mapping the file link and name. Inside other workflows, Drive's Download File to Media Library action does the same job.
