Connect WordPress and Mailchimp

Keep your Mailchimp audience in step with the people who have accounts on your WordPress site. New users join the audience, role changes become tags, deleted accounts leave the list, and Mailchimp unsubscribes or bounces are noted on the user's profile. FlowMattic runs as a plugin on that same site, so WordPress needs no extra connection.

Do this in Mailchimp16 actions

1. TriggerNew User
2. ActionAdd New Member

When WordPress fires New User, FlowMattic runs Add New Member in Mailchimp with the data from that event.

You build this in the FlowMattic workflow builder on your own site. See the setup steps

WordPress and Mailchimp workflows you can build

Each one uses only triggers and actions the two integrations ship today, plus FlowMattic's own tools. Where the library has a ready-made template, import it instead of building from scratch.

Add each new WordPress user to your Mailchimp audience

Every registration on a membership, course or community site adds the person to your audience with their name, so the list grows with the site.

Tag Mailchimp members by their WordPress role

When a user's role changes, for example from subscriber to customer, a Router adds the new role's tag and removes the old one, so campaigns can target each level.

Remove deleted site accounts from the audience

When an account is deleted, often because the person asked, the matching member is removed from the Mailchimp audience too, which saves a manual clean-up later.

Record a Mailchimp unsubscribe on the user's profile

When someone unsubscribes in Mailchimp, the workflow finds their WordPress account by email and sets a user meta field, so your site and other plugins know not to email them.

Flag bounced addresses on WordPress accounts

Mailchimp cleans addresses that keep bouncing. The workflow marks those users' profiles, so support knows to ask for a new email next time they log in.

Copy profile changes from Mailchimp to the WordPress user

When a subscriber edits their name in Mailchimp's preference page, the matching WordPress user is updated, so the site greets them the same way your emails do.

Note on the member when someone comments on your blog

An approved comment adds a note to the commenter's Mailchimp member, if they are on your audience, with the post title. It shows which topics your readers care about.

Set up: new users into your audience

At the end, each new WordPress user is added as a member of the Mailchimp audience you choose.

  1. Connect Mailchimp

Under Connects, add a Mailchimp connection for the account that holds your audience.

  2. Trigger on New User

Create a workflow with the WordPress New User trigger. Register a test account so FlowMattic captures the user's fields.

  3. Add the member

Add Mailchimp Add New Member, choose the audience, and map the email, first name and last name.

  4. Test and switch on

Test the step with your own new account, check that the member appears in the audience, and switch the workflow on.

Triggers and actions in this pair

A trigger starts a workflow. An action is something FlowMattic does in the app as a step.

Good to know

  • Mailchimp's actions here add, tag, note and delete members. There is no action to change a member's name or other fields, so send role or plan changes as tags.
  • Only add people who agreed to hear from you. If registration does not ask for consent, add a checkbox and a Filter on it before Add New Member.
  • Users who registered before the workflow was switched on are not added. Use Get All Users by Role with Iterator to bring them in once.

Why run this pair with FlowMattic

WordPress and Mailchimp connect through FlowMattic on your own site, with no separate automation account in the middle and no charge per run.

No separate sync plugin

FlowMattic covers new users, roles, deletions and unsubscribes in workflows you can read on one canvas.

Large sites, same cost

Runs are unlimited on your WordPress server, so a site with thousands of new accounts a month pays nothing extra in FlowMattic.

Both directions covered

WordPress events update Mailchimp, and Mailchimp's unsubscribes, bounces and profile edits update WordPress.

Common questions

How do I add new WordPress users to Mailchimp automatically?

Create a FlowMattic workflow with the WordPress New User trigger and a Mailchimp Add New Member step for your audience. Map the user's email and name, test with a new account and switch the workflow on.

Can my existing users be added too?

Yes. Run a one-off workflow from a Schedule that uses Get All Users by Role, loops over the users with Iterator and adds each with Add New Member.

Can a WordPress role decide which emails someone gets?

Yes. Tag members by role with Add Member Tag when the role is added or changed, and build Mailchimp segments on those tags.

Will deleting a user remove them from Mailchimp?

Only if you build that workflow. User Deleted with Delete List Member removes the member from the audience you choose.

Does WordPress need its own connection?

No. FlowMattic is a WordPress plugin, so the WordPress triggers and actions work on the site it is installed on without a connection.
